well it was a fine day yesterday so we turned some 9 week old baby ducks out into the pen by the house, we were round the yard and richard shouted for me, he had found a baby duck with blood pouring from its head and neck, it was too far gone to do anything so was dealt with. the dogs were out so they got the blame, but we thought it odd that there were 18 pekins running round the garden loose and they were fine and the dukling was in a pen. we were in the house having tea when the ducks looked a bit rattled and i got up to find 2 crows had had another one, same as before, pecked a hole int he back of the head, this one was alive and seemed not to bad so cleaned her up and put her under a light but she was dead this morning, probably shock. if i hadnt seen it myself i wouldnt have believed it, has anyone else had this happen or heard of it happeneing, we know they feed on weak lambs and dead carrion but as farmers are now made to remove and take all dead stuff to the kennels or incinerator there is no carrion about so is this going to happen more often. the sad thing was that they were both abacot ranger females and we had waited so long for babies and the parents are exhibition stock duckmad

Hiya Duckmad , im sorry about your loss , thats awful . I think its the time of year as its breeding season for these birds they become very territorial at this time of year . I have even seen them attacking birds of prey . It may be they have seen them as just plain easy targets. Crows have strange habits , they destroy things , like crops etc and all for nothing . Try putting some stuff in the field like hmm a brush handle stuck in the ground with a hat and jacket on ( wurzel gumadge style , or some of them silver things , what are they called again , tin foil things .
