If you keep Ducks, it's better if you can give them somewhere to get into and bathe. They can get by on a bucket or deep bowl, but I use an old bath dug into the ground. Did a deeper hole where the plug end is and fill with stone as a drainage sump. Block up the overflow..I used a nut and bolt pushed through a piece of rubber, cut from an old innertube. I also concreted around the area to stop it getting too muddy. At the plug end I hung a bit of old carpet to make it easier for them to get out. Baths are cheap or free and easy to swill out when dirty.

We've just built a small pond 4x2" with a couple of steps coming out. Im hoping to put some small reed like plants in there, and maybe a fountain. This pond is hopefully to serve two purposes. One for our pet duck (we've yet to get ) and two to attract wildlife. Do ducks eat fish . can we put some small fish into the pond and are they likely to live or have i just asked a really stupid question

There is no such thing as a stupid question. You need to be aware that if you let your duck in your pond it will dig up the plants, and poop in the water which will soon get smelly and toxic with nasty things like botulism. By all means have a wildlife pond and put some fish in, but keep the duck out. The best thing for a pet duck is something like a babys bath or one of those shell shaped kiddy paddling pool/sandpit things. You can simply empty it out every couple of days and keeo duckie, fishies, and frogs and newties all clean and healthy. To this end I built myself a raised pond so that my runner ducks cannot get into it and have made a sunken pond by digging a hole and lining it with a cheap blue tarpaulin.Eventually the geese claws rip it but it is only cheap. I simply empty it by pulling the liner to one side and allowing the water to soak away but a bath is a great idea for ducks. They can also be had for less than a fiver at your local council tip/recycling centre. Find a use for someone's old avocado bath

Thanks Onymee for your advice, all of which is taken onboard. If we go ahead with our duck plans then it looks like were be needing a seperate pool. thanks mandy
