My brooding pens are about 4ft square and the base is painted with white exterior wall paint (the textured type), . It gives them plenty of grip for the first week and then cover with dust free shavings. The food and water is then put in a tray to keep it above the shavings. When they move on, I just clean and repaint the floor.

If you are covering just a small area, say box size there is the gripper roll that is used to cover food trays etc to stop plates slipping about. I think it costs a couple of ££££ per roll but this looks like it might do the trick. Available from diy shops, pound stretcher etc. I presume this would work for little chick legs.

My only concern would be the ease of cleaning or wiping a surface coated with extrerior paint. I use a couch roll or kitchen roll. Couch roll is very very cheap, comes in 10 or 20" wide and very long. It is the stuff the doctor pull over the couch before he lets you get onto it. It works out about £4 for a very long roll. Very grippy and if you have your brooder near a wall, just hang the couch roll up, and when the brooder is dirty, pull the paper through and as the dirty goes out, the clean gets dragged in. Simple. Don't forget to compost it.
