I fed all the hens nice fresh apples today. I find that adding fresh stuff to the diet helps them come into breeding condition. I don't make things easy for the birds by chopping them I simply throw a whole apple in to each run and the hens have to work at getting their feast. They also get cabbage etc but apples are great as they apparently contains something which helps the immune system to fight off disease. I buy apples by the 18 kg box at the produce auction for only £3 a box because the parrots, rabbits and guinea pigs like them too.

hi onymee i have an apple tree in my garden and all the apples that drop i just stamp on and the chickens go mad for them especialy the large fowl hasnt done them any harm they are very healthy birds i also hang the occaional cabbage in there pen as i have an allotment and find that they love this sometimes i take them to my allotment if im spending a few hours there and i just let them scratch about and eat all the bugs and worms they love it
