I'd like to ask this lovely group what to expect now from our silkie hen. She's approaching a year old has just finished moulting has spent the past month being broody but is now off the nest. Do i need to condition her up or anything, will she start laying again now and if we put some fertile eggs under her could she go broody again so soon. thanks mandy.

Oh - silkies - my favourite.
If she's decided not to be broody for the moment then I'd feed up up with layers pellets plus a few little extra protein treats (a little grated cheese, or a chopped up hard-boiled egg mixed in with some oats, or wholemeal brown bread). That sort of thing. Plus a handful of mixed corn in the evenings. You'll have to wait until she decides to be broody again herself before putting egg under her again. It might be a few more weeks or a couple of months - she'll decide herself. Moulting plus being broody will have taken a lot out of her and she'll need to build herself up - mind you - being a silkie she just might decide to have another go next week! I'd certainly boost her food if you can though.
