Hi - Not been on here for ages & hi to all new members.
We have 6 young hyline plus hens. They are a few months old & we get 5 or 6 eggs every day. All have been fit & well.
The other day one of them had blood all around her "bum" (?) & the others were all pecking at her - in that area - we seperated her from the others & had a good look at her. There was lots of fresh blood around the area & "something" was sticking out - sorry but I don't know what it was - just know that it was fleshy & looked like it shouldn't be coming out. We cleaned her as best we could & We've kept her away from the others & she laid an egg yesterday but not today.
Whatever is sticking out of her is still there & doesn't look very nice.
She seems bright & well - is eating & pecking in the garden.
Sorry I don't know all the correct terminology but I've described it as best I can.
Hope someone can advise.

hi sounds like she is having a prolapse and trying to push her insides out. this is normally caused by overfat birds or too large an egg. try and get hold of her and clean the area up and try using some vaseline or something similar and push it all back in, you may need to be quite firm, the easiest way to do this is hold her upside down by her feet and let gravity help. once it has gone back in hold her like this for about half an hour and then put her somewhere dark and enclosed and give her water and only wheat if you have it or restrict her food, this should cause her to go into a moult as she will think the daylight hours have shortened, keep her here for about a week and when she starts to look a bit moth eaten and bedraggled, reintroduce her to the rest of the flock and she should be ok. i know all this sounds harsh but otherwise you may lose her as she will keep trying to lay and every egg she lays will do more damage and she will keep pushing more inside out, i hope this works and let us know how you get on. we had a duck did the same early on in the year and after a couple of days in we put her back to her group as she was looking lost and lonely and she started laying later that week and has laid ever since and been fine. the vet probably wont be able to do anything but will charge you for the privelege, its worth a try duckmad

Thanks Duckmad - I knew you'd know what to do. Yes I would say you're spot on with your diagnosis - I could only liken it to pups I have seen with prolapsed bottoms & you are right she does try to push her insides out. I don't think she's a fat bird - but she did lay a large egg the next day - not huge but quite a big one. I will try & do as you've advised, but she does like free ranging round the garden - but it makes sense what you say - so we shall have to be hard & try to make her better. She's called "pecker" 'cos she pecks at your trousers LOL - anyway - thanks very much & I'll let you know how it goes. Smudgley. x --- Off to find vaseline & disposble gloves. PS DM - What is the best thing to clean her grubby discharge stained feathers with? Any ideas?

Hi - We have been cleaning her with diluted veterinary antiseptic and we cut all her feathers away from the area (rightly or wrongly?) but they were getting messy - we have popped it back in a few times but she pops it straight back out. We pop it in - she pops it out....we pop it in.... you get the idea! So she looks like she has this "thing" coming out of her & lots of white coloured discharge. I'd like to take her to see the vet - but not sure they'd know what to do. She hasn't laid an egg since 26th May (unless she's lay one & we've not found it) she's not in her usual pen. We didn't hold her upside down for half an hour - but we did for quite a while. I had to hold her ever so gently though & kept telling her it was for her own good (lol) Will keep you posted.
