Hi Guys,
I'd like to know if any of you have converted a standard shed into a chook house? I'd much rather do that as it seems it would be lot cheaper than the custom built numbers.
Can anyone give me some hints and tips re the design changes I'd need to make to use a shed as a chook house. Even better if anyone has photo's of a conversion that would be tops.
I'm hoping to raise chooks purely for laying and get enough for a year round supply of eggs for my family (2+1 on the way) and the neighbours. What size of shed and run am I needing? And how many chooks am I needing?
Any help, greatly appreciated.

Hi Quinney, Yes i have converted sheds into hen houses. It works well and is probably the cheapest option if you already have one. Inside ours we have a row of nest boxes and a perch,we also cut a pop hole in the side so the chooks can get out and play lol I can take some pics tommorow if i have the time to give you some idea. If you want' chooks only for laying then you could do with some Hybrids, these are chickens that have been specially bred for egg production like the Blackrocks and White stars. A 6x4 shed would be ideal and make the run as big as you can or let them run free in your garden lol A hen will lay approx 1 egg every 25 hours so you can work out from that how many you will need but get a couple extra because this is not set in stone and hens can miss laying sometimes.. If you neeed any more help just ask and it wont' be long before someone comes along with an answer lol..

Thanks again Guys - The kennel conversion looked good on this section.
If anyone else wanted to post their conversions I'd appreciate it. Just if you have time of course.
Cheers.

Hi thought you might like to see our cheap conversions! this one is a kids chalet with the roof cut down to a slant rather than an apex and a nest box added to the back. in front is a nearly completed 8ft by 4ft run to attach to the side. this one was a Hozelock display stand (end panels only) and a few misc bits of other sheds cut up to make the nest box and side panels .2 eight foot runs have been added to the sides made from some batten.

Now that's impressive stuff. Was it difficult to make the nest boxes? Did you make them from a plan or are you just a Handy Andy/Tommy Walsh type character...
The non-playhouse one would be ideal for me. It's given me a few ideas for sure - thanks a bunch...
Keep 'em coming guys...

The nest boxes are made mostly from side panels from sheds. The lid and front are the same size panels with a floor added from thickish ply. a frame work is built inside to support the box. The sides are then boxed in using scrap/spare matching wood. Thin ply is used to partition inside to give 4 or 6 nest boxes.
I will try and take a better picture when it is dry outside to show the construction.
