Hi,
Do you keep copper black Marans?

Sorry Joni I only have the normal Marans. I have a friend who has some, but the last time I spoke to him he wasn't getting hardly any eggs. Marans are abit shy in laying and trying to get a line that lay well takes a long time. Copper Marans are even less inclined to lay?? I believe that they call some breeds rare, because they are poor layers or difficult to get a fertile cockbird.

Keep in touch Dougie and let me know what you get out..I will replace any clears/unfertilized eggs no problem. I bought a few ever and there is nothing more disappointing than a load of chuck-outs, when you candle them. It's not just about the cost..it's about the time involved finding out. I try to breed as near to the British poultry standard as I can. The birds I see sold at rare breed sales are sometimes not as good as they could be in that breed, but people go ahead and buy them because they are of that breed they like. They then breed and sometimes pass on a fault to another fancier..who breeds more..Eventually those birds are everywhere and it gets harder to find a good-un. Rant over..sorry I love my birds and spend hours enjoying their company.I don't sell to make money..just to keep their standard of living up.

I totally agree with you there Leghorn, I have recently been very disappointed as I bought 12 eggs from someone and on candling all but 1 were duff. It wasn't the money, it was the time wasted in the incubator when I could have had some good eggs in there and the fact that I had really been looking forward to having that particular breed hatch out.
You can buy most things but you can't buy back time. Faith
